Jim, I especially enjoyed your piece being a longtime Japanese afficienado. I remember a graduate class in geography eons ago where we read and discussed Sinoon’s classic”Eat Not this Flesh” about food avoidances through history and the result! Great selection! Recovering now from heart valve surgery! Much rejuvenated!
It's good to hear of your rejuvenation. The Simoon book is amazing, right? I knew it was a great book when I followed note #93 in Chapter 4 about Beef to a two-page explanation on pages 163-164 about the worship of sacred bulls. Zoroastrians preserved the urine of the sacred bulls to use in washing ceremonies. The B&W maps in the back are also full of information. I was glad to see that archive.org had a digital copy of the book for easy access.
I so, so enjoy your history "lessons."
